My mother always tried to teach me to respect authority and be polite. This was a big struggle for me as a punk teenager, as I was used to challenging authority and bucking social norms. Despite our differences, she began to accept my individualism and respect my right to make choices—even when they weren't exactly in line with her own ideals. She tried hard to teach me the importance of kindness and understanding, while supporting me and allowing me to express my angst and rebel in a constructive way.
